Antonio Conte’s Tottenham have crashed out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage, condemning Spurs to yet-another season without a trophy. It’ll now be at least 16 years since the club last received some winners’ medal, the most recent time being the 2008 League Cup.
Hopes were high that Spurs could undo the 1 goal deficit they had against AC Milan, yet Conte’s side delivered a trademark performance bereft of quality and urgency. The club looks no closer to silverware than it did before the Italian’s arrival, and Conte himself hinted that his stint in North London could be coming to an end.
Conte was appointed in November 2021 and his transfer activity in the summer of 2022 was highly-lauded, with many saying Tottenham finally had the squad and manager to seriously challenge Manchester City and Liverpool.

Conte Has Fallen Short
The former Juventus and Inter Milan boss arrived at Tottenham to much fanfare as he had the experience to guide the club back to the top of the Premier League table. He also took over from the reviled Nuno Espirito Santo, who himself was appointed following the sacking of Jose Mourinho, much to the delight of the Spurs’ support.
But Conte has never quite propelled Spurs to their highest potential. There have been highlights along the way, but the Italian hasn’t made the club the formidable force they were under Mauricio Pochettino and the team appears to have stagnated.
Conte needs to find solutions if he has any hope of buying some more time at Spurs’ wonderful stadium. His side play with a cautiousness and pragmatism not fitting of the majestic arena they play in, and any talk of them challenging for the league title evaporated months ago.
Problems In Front Of Goal
Harry Kane may be in great form this season, but he remains the only Spurs player to offer a threat going forward. Richarlison looks a waste of £60m, whilst Heung Min-Son looks a shell of the player who won the Golden Boot last season.
It’s sad to see one of the UK’s finest football clubs perform so timidly in Europe. Conte may talk the talk, but he’s incredibly unable to walk the walk and I’d wager that it’s only a matter of time before he departs for sunnier shores.
Harry Kane surely deserves better than to watch the Champions League final on television every year. If he’s serious about staying at Tottenham, then Daniel Levy must make sure that he appoints a manager of Kane’s choosing. It’s just common sense.
