Salaries Published
Each year the BBC publishes the salaries of its highest-paid employees as part of it’s annual reporting and each year we get to see who’s pockets we’re lining the most with our licence fee.
We’ll get to the biggest hitters in a moment.. But first, it’s revealed that one of the hardest working people in the business is Stephen Nolan’s agent. Who is Stephen Nolan is probably a question many people had when he was named fifth on the list.
Nolan takes home a whopping £405,000 each year from the BBC, which is a slight increase on his pay last year. And for what? Presenting on Radio Ulster, Nolan Live on BBC One in Northern Ireland and presenting infrequent late-night shows on Five Live.
The BBC are essentially paying a local radio DJ over £400,000 each year while local services across the country are being cut and jobs are being slashed. These decisions absolutely baffle me.
Speaking of making no sense, Huw Edwards, who resigned from the BBC in April on medical advice has seen his salary increase by £40,000. And to Gary Lineker, the BBC poster boy - he’s only gone and bagged £1.35 in the last year for talking about football once a week on a Saturday evening, some life.
Streaming Services Growiong In Popularity
The report adds that half a million people stopped paying the licence fee in the last year as more people, presumably, switch to other streaming services that offer more value than the BBC.
In a time where every penny is accounted for more than ever, it makes such little sense why the BBC continue to hand out huge sums of money for people that give back very few hours of service.
The best of the BBC is in it’s programming, it’s rights and it’s productions. Very little of this is influenced by the star names that front them, rather those who are working behind the scenes the make it all happen and the investment to acquire rights.
The BBC at it’s best is second to none and I hope they stop making bizarre decisions to appease their biggest stars and focus on what makes it truly unique.
