Musician Greed
Gig tickets in the UK have become expensive beyond belief and greedy, millionaire musicians need to look at themselves
Oh to be a pop star and record one good two-three-minute track and live off millions for the rest of my days, it’s easy work, really. Not only will the millions in royalties keep the coffers topped up for the rest of my life, but the astronomical prices I can charge my fans to watch me perform will help me stay rich beyone my wildest dreams.
That’s all a rather nasty way of thinking - though, let’s be honest, isn’t too far away from how we’d really act if we hit fame from a hit song. Well, it’s near-enough to what is happening with rising stars in music now.
Music fans were outraged by the ticket prices for Sabrina Carpenter’s UK tour, with the tickets in the gods costing £240 and many of the seated tickets coming in at £200. Sabrina Carpenter recently shot to fame with her hit song ‘espresso’ and gained popularity while supporting Taylor Swift during part of the all-conquering Eras Tour. She has a limited profile in the UK but though it was right to charge these prices, the name of her tour is ‘short and sweet’ - I’m not sure if that’s in reference to her career or the show itself, which fans paying lots of money for will hope isn’t the case!
Skyrocketing Prices
She’s not alone and the cost of attending live music events in the UK has skyrocketed. A ticket to Glastonbury cost £355 this year, up from £205 in 2013 and a world away from the £105 in 2003. Yes, everything has increased in price recently, but this is exponentially higher.
I’m aware that lots of artists rely on live touring to support their income with many using it as their best source of cash as the money paid by the biggest streaming platforms is hardly worth mentioning. So for smaller-middle-sized acts I can see why they may have to lean on the punters to keep the show on the road. But the chart-toppers have no excused.
The lockdowns will have also played their part as touring artists recoup the lost months and cash during these years.
But does all of this justify the biggest acts in the world, the multimillionaries of music, to take advantage of their loyal fans by charging so much money to watch them live? I’d say not and suggest these people take a long look in the mirror.
