Matt Hancock has undone all the good work he showcased on last year’s I’m A Celebrity..Get Me Out Of Here by becoming embroiled in yet another scandal about his role as Health Secretary.
Hancock was never embraced by the public due to his awkward interviews and reserved demeanor, but I always considered him to be a good man who was just overwhelmed by the biggest health crisis of the last 100 years. Whilst he certainly wasn’t perfect, I did think he was at least trying to make a difference - even catching COVID himself in the early days of the pandemic as he scurried about looking for solutions.
Shameful Behaviour
I won’t go into all the grizzly details about Mr. Hancock’s disregard for his own rules, but it’s safe to say that I’m bitterly disappointed in his conduct in public office. As tough and unprecedented as 2020 was, the least our officials could’ve done was tackle the crisis with dignity, class, and endeavor.
No matter which side of the political divide you fall on, you’re likely in agreement with me that politicians should always lead by example and act as statespeople for our great nation.
More and more information about Hancock’s reign as Health Secretary is coming out, and whilst not all of the information is yet to be verified, it looks as if he’s taken us all for fools. I think I speak for everyone when I say he should be ashamed of himself.
Hancock Out Of Touch
Hancock seems to operate with all the grace Harry and Meghan do. The latter broke my heart due to their contempt of our wonderful Royal Family, but the former makes me irate for his alleged attitude towards the Great British workforce. As the UK, and world in general, was fighting the invisible enemy of COVID-19, it was its everyday heroes who got us through.
Our wonderful NHS treated the unwell, our service staff remained at their posts, and our friends gave us some much-needed company over Zoom.
Public figures are there to serve the public, not vice-versa. As we all sacrificed our lives for the greater good, it’s incredibly frustrating that our officials were not doing the same. A seminal moment in British history, the COVID-19 pandemic helped us realise that we’d be nothing without the hardworking, dedicated folk we come across every day.
Matt Hancock can, in theory, still redeem his public image, but millions of Brits will consider this too little, too late - and rightly so. No matter how many reality shows he appears on, Hancock’s image may be beyond help.
Words cannot express how jaded I am about the Matt Hancock revelations and perhaps my faith in the Establishment really has faded a little.
